Click To Donate: How Charities Use Tech To Solve Social Problems

Donating money to a good cause has never been easier. Paper checks are becoming a thing of the past, as more consumers and non-profits turn to digital banking, crowdfunding platforms and mobile giving apps. Just last week, to aid end-of-year donations, Google enabled a new feature that allows users to donate right through their Google Assistant with a simple "Ok Google, make a donation".

The Digital Giving for Good podcast explores the state of the use of technology in the non-profit sector through real-life success stories that show that technology can be a force for good. We get to hear from inspiring developers behind innovative new non-profits in the US “who don't just enable us to give through technology, but then make it easier, more efficient, more part of our everyday lives.” Guests on the show speak about how their backgrounds informed and inspired their initiatives and how technology allowed them to have a bigger impact on the communities they serve.

First of them is Tiffani Bell, co-founder of The Human Utility, a website that matches low-income families and seniors unable to pay their water bills with people who want to cover the costs and help them avoid disastrous consequences — from water shutoffs to children being removed from their homes by Child Protective Services. Then, the podcast moves on to Tiffany Mikell and Kortney Ziegler, makers of Appolition, an app that combats mass incarceration by using spare change from everyday credit card purchases to help people in need of bail.

Digital Giving for Good is the ninth episode of the podcast Function With Anil Dash launched in the late October of 2018 as a cooperation between Vox Media and collaborative coding community Glitch. In a half an hour to one hour long format, host and Glitch CEO Anil Dash leads a conversation with ingenious developers and insightful tech experts, exploring the ways that technology transforms our communications, culture and society.
